JOHNSON, VERMONT — The Current Topics in Science Speaker Series at Johnson State College will begin Sept. 6 with a talk by JSC faculty member Lisa Zinn on monitoring nesting bird populations through bird banding. The series is coordinated by the college’s Department of Environmental & Health Sciences.
All talks, free and open to the public, will be 4-5:15 p.m. in Room 207 Bentley Hall.

· Sept. 20, Jim Cummings with Essex Physical Therapy, rehabilitation for knee ACL injuries
· Sept. 27, Jason Shafer, director of the Vermont Institute of Applied Meteorology at Lyndon State College, forecasting power outages from wet snow and ice
· Oct. 4, David Mears, Vermont Law School professor, legal issues related to groundwater contamination in North Bennington
· Oct. 11, Carissa Stein and Phillip Wilson with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service in Vermont
· Oct. 25, Joe Veldon with Seven Leaf Organics in Morrisville, trends in medical uses of cannabis
· Nov. 1, Andrea Villanti, associate professor, University of Vermont psychiatry department, tobacco use in the U.S.
· Nov. 8, Heather Pembrook, Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation, effects of acid rain on Vermont’s acid lakes
· Nov. 15, Kip Potter, Natural Resources Conservation Service, phosphorus and agriculture related to Lake Champlain’s restoration
· Nov. 29, John O’Meara, St. Michael’s College astronomy and physics professor, the atomic history of the universe
· Dec. 6, Kent McFarland, Vermont Center for Ecostudies, natural history and conservation of Vermont butterflies
· Dec. 13, Lesley-Ann Giddings, Middlebury College, using nature as a guide in engineering microbial natural products
